Pet Microchipping: Why Is It Important?

What Is a Pet Microchip?

A microchip is a small electronic device, approximately the size of a grain of rice, that is implanted just beneath your pet’s skin.

Each microchip contains a unique identification number linked to the owner's information in a registration database. When scanned by a compatible microchip reader, the identification number can be retrieved, allowing veterinary clinics, shelters, or relevant authorities to contact the owner.

It is important to note that a microchip is not a GPS tracking device and cannot provide real-time location tracking. Its primary purpose is permanent identification.

Why Should Pets Be Microchipped?

1. Permanent Identification

A microchip provides your pet with a unique lifelong identification number that cannot be removed, lost, or altered like collars and tags.

This helps verify ownership and reduces the risk of mistaken identity if a pet becomes lost or separated from its family.

2. Increased Chance of Reuniting Lost Pets

If a lost pet is brought to a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or organization equipped with a microchip scanner, the microchip can be used to identify the owner quickly. This significantly improves the likelihood of a safe and timely reunion.

3. Compliance with Local Regulations

In Bangkok, pet registration regulations require dogs and cats over two months of age to be microchipped and properly registered.

These measures help improve pet identification, support responsible pet ownership, and reduce issues related to lost or abandoned animals.

Is Microchipping Safe?

Microchipping is considered a safe and routine veterinary procedure that typically takes only a few minutes to perform.

The microchip is usually implanted beneath the skin between the shoulder blades or at the back of the neck using a sterile applicator. General anesthesia is not normally required.

Most pets experience only mild and temporary discomfort, similar to receiving a vaccination, and can return home immediately after the procedure.

When Should a Pet Be Microchipped?

Microchipping can generally be performed from approximately eight weeks of age and is often done during a routine vaccination visit.

Early microchipping helps ensure that pets are protected and identifiable from a young age, providing peace of mind for owners throughout their pet’s lifetime.
